Three Americans were among the perpetrators who were arrested following an attempted military coup last Sunday in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the AP reported , citing local authorities.
Local media initially identified the gunmen as Congolese soldiers, but later reported that they were linked to self-exiled opposition figure Christian Malanga, a U.S. resident. One of those arrested was Malanga’s son, who was murdered. at the presidential palace after resisting arrest by guards, Army spokesman Sylvain Ekenge said.
On Sunday, Ekenge noted that the coup attempt was “ nipped in the bud by the Congolese defense and security forces” and that “the situation is under control.”
Meanwhile, videos spread on social media show one of the Americans, a man with blood around his mouth, sitting on the ground, appearing to beg Congolese soldiers to forgive him.
