Ilham Ehmed, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, took part in a press conference held via Zoom by the Kurdish Center for Studies and the Target Media and Education Organization. At the meeting, which was attended by many journalists and media outlets, Ilham Ahmed answered questions on developments in Syria, especially the attacks on the Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafiyah and Beni Zayd neighborhoods of Aleppo, as well as the attacks on Dêr Hafir and the Tishrin Dam line.
Drawing attention to the involvement of many parties, including foreign groups within the so-called “Syrian Army,” in the attacks on the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods, Ilham Ehmed stated that the number of those killed is far higher than what has been announced, but that some cases remain unclarified. She therefore called for independent human rights organizations to be allowed to investigate the crimes.
Ilham Ahmed said that all the facts that have emerged prove that the Syrian Interim Government is not ready to implement the agreements signed with North and East Syria. She called on the government to acknowledge that the Autonomous Administration has demonstrated its commitment to implementing the March 10 Agreement and to dialogue, and to admit that it itself is the obstacle preventing the agreement from being implemented.
“The Interim Government is deceiving the public by accusing the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of attacking the neighborhoods,” Ehmed said, warning that this deliberate approach could lead to the risk of conflict between Kurds and Arabs.
Ilham Ahmed called on everyone to avoid sectarian rhetoric and to prevent internal conflict.
Regarding the increase in attacks, Ehmed stated that there is serious international concern over the attacks against the SDF, noting that talks with international powers are ongoing concerning the attacks on Dêr Hafir and the buildup of military forces. She warned that the recent increase in military movements and activities, especially due to the interim government’s deployment of additional forces to Dêr Hafir and Meskenê, is creating the risk of civil war in Syria.
Criticizing the statements of Ahmed al-Sharaa, Ilham Ehmed said that al-Sharaa is turning reality upside down and in this way declaring war on the Kurds. She rejected claims by the Interim Government and Ankara that there is cooperation between the authorities of North and East Syria and Iran, saying these allegations are being used to deepen the crisis.
Recalling that cooperation with the United States continues on the basis of the fight against ISIS, Ehmed said that relations are ongoing regarding the current situation as well. She noted that one of the conditions for the lifting of US sanctions on Syria is that the interim government protect the rights of all components of Syria, and called on the US Congress to monitor whether the Syrian Interim Government is complying with these conditions.
At the end of the meeting, Ehmed said that Arab states are playing an active role in helping Syria and preventing a possible civil war.
She reiterated that the Autonomous Administration continues to maintain its position for the establishment of a democratic and egalitarian Syria.
Stating that the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria is continuing its efforts to stop the war, Ehmed said: “In this context, we have relations with Turkey and the International Coalition, but Damascus is not responding.”
